Free Prom Attire for Chicagoland Juniors and Seniors

Living off a limited income can be a really hard. It becomes harder when special occasions come and members of your family wants to be a part of them.  These days you can find seniors in high school searching online or looking through the prom catalog for their favorite prom dress.  Prom is a great time, but there are many young ladies and men who may not be able to participate in prom due to not having the money to purchase their favorite prom attire. 

To help with ensuring that many of Chicago's youth get a chance to experience prom, there are a few different events that will help them get a free dress and accessories.Check out this list that has free prom dress and accessories available for the teens of Chicago.

Need a new dress for your senior or junior prom, we are able to assist you in that. Come join our event to receive your free dress. Dresses are donated from bridal/prom stores. Why pay full price when you can get it for free with us. Prom Girls Rock! is a not-for-profit organization that gives away free prom dresses and accessories to high school students in the Chicago-land and surrounding areas. Glass Slipper Project ® was founded in 1999 and has helped more than 20,000 young women attend their proms in style! Save Money and Earn College Credits by Enrolling in Dual Enrollment Programs



News Flash  . . .  the reaming of the 2015 - 2016 school year starts today.  While I know coming back to school off of a vacation is pretty hard, the school year must go on.  To get back in the groove of things, I wanted to share with you a great opportunity. If you know or have a high school junior or senior, please share this information with them.

High school juniors and seniors have the opportunity to enroll in college level courses before their high school graduation. Students from local high schools may elect to enroll in one college course per semester at City College of Chicago and other local colleges.  If your student enrolls in a CCC Dual Enrollment, they will be able to take their course at one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago campuses

Jumping Jack Application Available for City of Chicago Block Parties

When I was a child, I love when my neighborhood would have our annual black party. One staple that was always at our black party was the City of Chicago Jumping Jack. All kids no matter the age loves getting in the Jumping Jack. If you are planing to have a block party this summer,  I recommend that you complete the application to receive a jumping jack for your block party from the City of Chicago. 

 
The application for the popular Jumping Jack program is now available. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events began accepting completed applications on Wednesday, April 1. Jumping Jack inflatables are available on a first-come, first-served basis on Saturdays and Sundays ONLY, beginning May 23 through August 30, 2015. You can print the application from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events website or pick them  up at your local Alderman office.

Please note that rules and regulations have changed significantly for the season:
  • Inflatables will only be provided to residential block parties within the city limits of Chicago. Events on private property, in parks, in forest preserves, private parties, birthday parties, schools and festivals are not eligible to apply.
  • Inflatables are for outdoor use only and can only be set up on pavement, asphalt or concrete.
  • Applicants will receive notification by email or phone on the status of their request. The contracted provider will call to set up deliveries.
  • Approved block parties will receive an inflatable for (4) hours between the hours of 10:00 am and 6:00 pm on the scheduled day. Actual hours will be determined by availability. Only one inflatable will be delivered to a requesting block party.
  • Generators are not provided. It is the responsibility of the requesting party to supply electrical power (120 watts) to operate the inflatable within 100 ft of the inflatable.
  • All parked vehicles must be removed from the location of the inflatable. Applicants are responsible for securing all necessary street closure permits from the 7th Ward Public Service Office.
Take the time now to plan a block party and reserve the Jumping Jack from the City of Chicago.

Tuition Free Classes at South Suburban College for Unemployed Residents

Do you live in the College District 51? If so, please be sure to read this full post and share with those who can benefit. Starting December 8th, South Suburban College Rebound "Tuition-Free" Program for Unemployed Residents will begin taking applications. Rebound is a tuition-free educational program for unemployed residents in College District 51. Rebound classes are offered in 19 select academic areas offering short-term certificates or degrees leading to new, rewarding careers.

To qualify, Rebound applicants must live in College District 510 and have lost their job since 2011 for reasons other than performance, and remain unemployed. Seats in these classes are offered on a first come, first served basis. General registration is currently open, while Rebound students must wait until December 8th to begin selecting their courses. Spring classes begin on Monday, January 12, 2015.

Free Mulch for City of Chicago Residents

Calling all Chicago home owners, the Bureau of Forestry of the Department of Streets & Sanitation offers free mulch.  The mulch is available on a limited basis for pick up during working hours of 6:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

The tree mulch makes great use for gardening, flowerbeds, tree beds, playgrounds, parking areas and many other countless uses. Mulch can be used around the trunk of trees, it will benefit trees by helping roots stay warm during the cold and keep roots cool during the summer time.

The locations for pick up are:

  • 4101 North Oak Park Avenue (Chicago Read Center)
  • Grand and Rockwell  (South of Grand Avenue, behind of the salt pile, along the south fence)
  • 52nd and Oakley (near the Salt Dome)
  • 2342 South Ashland Avenue (North West corner of property)
  • 900 East 103rd Street (North East corner of property)

You can call 311 or visit these locations for more information on how to obtain free mulch for your home or business.  With the sky rocket prices I will be making a stop by a location near me to get the yard together for fall landscaping.

Education and Resource Fair 1:0 ~ Connecting Communities To Opportunities

You and your family are invited to Big Shoulders Fund Resource Fair. If you are not familiar with Big Shoulders Fund, let me tell you about this great organization.  The mission of the Big Shoulders Fund is to provide support to Catholic schools in the neediest areas of inner-city Chicago.The programs that Big Shoulders Fund manage benefit the hardest working students in Chicago, providing scholarships, special education programs, instructional equipment, much-needed school facility improvements, faculty support, operating grants and more. 

The resource fair will take place on Saturday, August 16th  from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at St. Ailbe School located at 9037 S. Harper (intersection of 91st street and Stony Island Avenue).  The purpose of the community resource fair is to spread awareness about Big Shoulders Fund partner schools.  The resource fair will also have vital and resourceful community based organizations throughout Chicago there to help connect the communities to services.  Last but not least, the resource fair will also celebrate the Chicago students and families returning to school!

Free Nike Chicago Career Workshop for Teens


Do your teen have aspirations to be the next best shoe designer?  If so, they may be interested in a few FREE workshops that Nike is doing in Chicago.  Truestar Magazine and Nike Chicago are offering 16-22 yr olds an opportunity to participate in career workshops led by industry experts. Workshops in product design, sneaker design, photography, graffiti art, spoken word, merchandising, branding.

These workshops fill up fast and are first come first serve, so be sure to register as soon as possible.  The workshops are free and lunch will be provided.
